Curious enough to question the norm.

Build the athlete.
Performance will follow.

Rooted Academy is where I share what I'm learning about raising healthier, more resilient young athletes, and Development Culture™, the training philosophy I license to clubs and academies who want to build it in.

Hi, I'm Carrie.

Food was only the beginning.

Some of you have been here since the Rooted Foods days, when I thought my mission was helping families put healthier food in lunch boxes. Over time, I realized the bigger question wasn't what kids eat; it's how they're raised as athletes and people.

The more I watched my own kids develop, and the more I coached, read, and learned, the more curious I became. Why are kids specializing so young? How does nutrition affect confidence and recovery? What does healthy development actually look like? Are we pushing kids too hard, too young? What are they missing out on when we do this?

Children should never feel like they are being recruited before they are taught.

My own thesis: a lot of what looks like "overprogramming" isn't one travel team or one sport; it's kids on multiple travel teams across multiple sports at 8 and 9 years old, losing the downtime that actually builds resilient, confident athletes. I'm not a doctor, and I'm not here with injury statistics. I'm here with what I'm learning, and the white space I think every young athlete deserves.

01

Physical & mental health, equally

Brain health gets the same weight as physical training, not a footnote to it.

02

White space over more reps

Unstructured downtime is part of the plan, not a gap in it.

03

Curiosity, not alarm

No fear-based stats. Just what I'm learning, shared honestly.

Development Before Competition

The Development Culture™ Manifesto

Today, the pathway gets competitive & demanding early.

The learning window is shrinking for kids ages 6 to 12. There's a large pool of athletes who aren't ready for a full competitive schedule, not because they lack ability, but because they need more intentional training first. Not every developing athlete needs the same competitive pathway. But every developing athlete can benefit from great training.

Why we exist: build the athlete, performance will follow. The goal isn't to create the best 9-year-old; it's to help each 9-year-old become the best athlete they can become.

Physical Development

Movement quality, coordination, balance, agility, strength & mobility appropriate to the athlete's stage.

Skill Development

Fundamental sport skills taught progressively and intentionally, before competition demands them.

Athletic & Game Intelligence

Reading the game, making decisions, solving problems, understanding why, not just following instructions.

Mental + Emotional Development

Confidence, resilience, emotional regulation, and separating self-worth from performance.

Character + Team Development

Leadership, accountability, sportsmanship, communication, and contributing to something bigger than oneself.

Built for your club

A licensable framework, not a one-size template

Development Culture™ is adapted to each club or academy: the philosophy stays constant, the application flexes to your sport, your coaches, and your existing pathway.

The Gap

Too often, athletes who make the top team gain access to the strongest coaching and resources, while developing athletes are left to close the gap on their own. Development Culture™ builds a pathway for both.

The Club Lens

Your club likely already has the coaches, facilities, and competitive pathway. The opportunity is building a development-first track into the ecosystem you've already built, a philosophy most clubs already believe in.

Competition's Role

Competition matters. Winning matters. But long-term performance is built through what happens between the games, not just during them.

Build the Foundation

A seasonal training program built around training first, competition second, resulting in stronger, more resilient athletes entering your competitive pathway.
